The Dinosaur Who Didn’t Want to Roar

In the middle of the Fernfire Jungle, where tall ferns brushed the sky, and glowing mushrooms dotted the ground like tiny lanterns, lived a small dinosaur named Pebble.
Pebble was not the biggest dinosaur. He was not the strongest either.
But Pebble had the most curious eyes in the whole jungle.
During the day, the jungle was loud and busy. Big dinosaurs stomped through the trees. Birds swooped through the air. Rivers splashed over smooth stones.
And every dinosaur in the valley loved to do one thing more than anything else.
They loved to roar.
“RROOOAAARRR!” boomed Boulder the Triceratops.
“RRRAAAOOORR!” answered Flint the Stegosaurus.
Even the younger dinosaurs practiced every afternoon near the tall red cliffs.
Pebble stood with them, shifting his feet in the grass.
“Your turn, Pebble!” called Flint.
Pebble swallowed. His tail twitched.
He took a deep breath.
“Rooo—”
But instead of a mighty roar, a tiny sound slipped out.
Pffft.
The other dinosaurs blinked.
Pebble’s cheeks grew warm.
“Maybe try louder,” Boulder said kindly.
Pebble tried again.
He lifted his head, opened his mouth wide, and pushed all the air he could from his belly.
“RRROOO—”
Pffft.
The sound floated away like a sleepy bubble.
A few dinosaurs giggled.
Pebble quickly closed his mouth.
“I think… I’ll practice later,” Pebble mumbled.
But the truth was something Pebble had never told anyone.
Pebble didn’t like roaring.
Roaring was loud. Roaring shook the ground. Roaring made the birds fly away.
Pebble liked quiet things.
Pebble liked the rustling of leaves. The soft splash of river water. The whispery buzz of glowing insects at night.
Most of all, Pebble loved listening to the jungle when it was calm and still.
That evening, the sun dipped behind the mountains, and the jungle slowly turned gold, then purple, then deep blue.
The herd settled down for the night.
One by one, the dinosaurs curled into the soft grass.
Soon, the valley grew peaceful.
Pebble was almost asleep when something strange caught his eye.
Just beyond the ferns, near the edge of the jungle, something was glowing.
Pebble blinked.
The glow moved.
He quietly lifted his head.
There, in the dirt, were a line of tiny footprints.
And every footprint shimmered with soft green light.
Pebble’s eyes widened.
What made those?
He looked around.
The other dinosaurs were snoring gently.
Snrrrfff…
Hrrrmmm…
Pebble slowly stood up.
The glowing footprints led into the dark jungle.
Pebble hesitated.
The trees looked tall and mysterious at night.
But curiosity tugged at him.
Just a little look, Pebble thought.
Very quietly, he followed the glowing trail.
Step.
Step.
Step.
The jungle felt different at night.
Moonlight slipped through the leaves like silver ribbons.
Glowing mushrooms lit the path with soft blue light.
Fireflies drifted through the air like tiny floating stars.
Pebble walked deeper into the jungle.
The glowing footprints continued ahead of him, winding between trees and over mossy rocks.
Soon, Pebble heard something else.
A small sound.
Scrrrk.
Pebble froze.
The sound came again.
Scrrrk… scrrrk…
It sounded like someone trying to move a heavy rock.
Pebble carefully pushed aside a curtain of vines.
Behind the vines stood an ancient stone cave.
The cave entrance was half covered with fallen rocks.
And beneath those rocks was a tiny glowing creature.
It looked a little like a baby dinosaur… and a little like a lizard… and a little like something Pebble had never seen before.
Its skin shimmered like moonlight on water.
Its eyes were wide with worry.
And its tail glowed the same soft green as the footprints.
The creature tugged at a rock with its small claws.
Scrrrk.
But the rock didn’t move.
Pebble stepped closer.
The creature saw him and froze.
Its glow flickered nervously.
Pebble remembered how loud the herd’s roars could be.
If he roared now, it might scare the creature even more.
So Pebble spoke softly.
“Hello,” he said.
The creature blinked.
Pebble sat down slowly so he wouldn’t look big or scary.
“Are you stuck?” Pebble asked gently.
The creature made a tiny sound.
Peep.
Pebble looked at the rocks.
They weren’t enormous, but they were heavy.
Pebble pressed his shoulder against the largest one.
“Okay,” Pebble said quietly. “Let’s move this together.”
He pushed.
The rock didn’t budge.
Pebble dug his feet into the dirt and tried again.
“Unnnnh…”
The rock shifted a little.
Scrrrk.
The glowing creature wiggled its tail excitedly.
Pebble pushed harder.
The rock slid aside.
The creature wriggled free and hopped onto the ground.
It stretched its tiny legs.
Then it looked up at Pebble.
For a moment, neither of them moved.
Then the creature gave a happy little chirp.
Prrrp!
Suddenly, its glow grew brighter.
The soft green light spread across the cave walls.
Pebble blinked in surprise.
The creature hopped onto a stone and wagged its glowing tail.
Light rippled through the jungle.
The nearby mushrooms began to glow brighter.
Fireflies flickered like tiny lanterns.
Even the leaves seemed to sparkle.
The whole jungle slowly filled with gentle, glowing light.
Pebble stared in wonder.
Wow…
Just then, a loud crashing sound echoed through the trees.
“RRROOOAAARRR!”
Pebble turned.
The herd burst through the jungle.
Boulder stomped forward.
“Pebble! There you are!” he said. “We saw strange lights and thought there might be danger!”
Flint raised his spiky tail.
“Stand back! I’ll scare it away with a roar!”
“Wait!” Pebble said quickly.
But Flint had already taken a deep breath.
“RRR—”
The glowing creature jumped and hid behind Pebble’s leg.
Pebble gently raised a claw.
“It’s okay,” he told the herd. “It’s not dangerous.”
The dinosaurs looked confused.
Pebble stepped aside so they could see the tiny glowing creature.
“It was trapped under rocks,” Pebble explained. “I helped move them.”
The creature peeked out.
Its glow shimmered softly across the dinosaurs’ faces.
The jungle around them twinkled with peaceful light.
The herd grew quiet.
No one roared.
Boulder leaned down slowly.
“Well,” he said, “that’s the most beautiful thing I’ve seen in a long time.”
Flint scratched his head.
“You didn’t scare it away,” he said.
Pebble shook his head.
“No,” Pebble said softly. “I just talked to it.”
The glowing creature hopped onto Pebble’s back.
It curled its tail around Pebble’s neck like a warm little lantern.
The jungle shimmered brighter.
Boulder smiled.
“Maybe roaring isn’t always the best way to help,” he said.
Flint nodded.
“Maybe not.”
Pebble felt warm inside.
For the first time, he didn’t feel strange for being quiet.
The herd slowly walked back toward the valley.
The glowing creature rode happily on Pebble’s back, lighting the path like a tiny moon.
Above them, the stars twinkled in the sky.
Below them, the jungle glowed softly.
And Pebble, the dinosaur who didn’t want to roar, walked peacefully through the Fernfire Jungle.
Sometimes the loudest sound in the world is a roar.
But sometimes the quietest voice can shine the brightest.
Pebble liked that much better.
Much, much better. 🦕
